Fish out your fish nets and heat up your crimping iron! Queer Prom is back and this year we dive into the 80s for a totally tubular night of getting footloose on the dance floor. Whether you be a wallflower or an avant garde flashdancer-all queers (except TERFs, SWERFs and bigots) are welcome at queer prom! Featuring a playlist by Belle Indifference of both popular and obscure dance music from the 1980s, everyone from goth wastoids to preppy pop radio queers will have something to dance to. There will be a photo booth where you can crown yourself as Prom royalty, or just capture your epic 80s prom ensemble. There will be plenty of tables and chairs where you can sip free punch and catch up with your friends or flirt with bodacious babes.
This is an unlicensed event, there will be no alcohol sales. There will be free punch (If you choose to spike your own punch, please ensure you have a sober ride home!) and water available as well as some snacks. There will be harm reduction supplies and safer sex supplies available as well as volunteers around of a safety and consent team who will have harm reduction supplies, water and can assist you, or find you the support you need. While enjoying yourself at Prom, meeting new and familiar queer cuties, please bear in mind to get enthusiastic and ongoing consent from someone before touching them or entering their space. Respect the choice of anyone to say no and respect all boundaries. If you have some needs that are unaddressed here, please DM Kara or Nicola and we will do our best to accommodate. PLEASE do not drink or use and drive. Plan ahead and organize a safe and sober ride home. Feel free to use the comments on this event page if you are coming from further out and are hoping to catch a ride to the valley and back! If you plan to use substances, please have them tested beforehand at ANKORS, Saturday through Thursday. Get in touch by emailing drugcheckankors@gmail.com or calling or texting 236 972 7080 Please, start low, go slow and don’t use alone.
If you do not have a credit card to use to buy advanced tickets, DM either Nicola or Kara to have your name added to the door list where you can pay cash at the door or have free admission is cost is a barrier. We recommend that you do not wait too long, this event sold out last year! If you are sick by the time of the event, DM one of the organizers and we will refund your ticket. Do not come if you are sick, please. INFO: There is no cell service in the valley, nor is there internet available in the building. There is a landline that can be accessed if needed. Accessibility: entry is a mostly level gravel path (we will try to keep the parking spaces nearest the door available for people with disabilities), leading to a concrete slab with a 3/4 inch lip with a slight incline and two 1/2 in lips 3/4 inch apart at the threshold of the front double door. There are three washrooms, the first two are small single stall non-gendered washrooms, one with a urinal and both with sit-toilets. The third washroom has 34 1/2 inch doorway, the door opens inward, with space near the toilet to enter and close the door. There are two support bars around the toilet, one in front and one to the left hand side of the toilet. the sink has no lower cabinet, some space underneath to roll under. The room is a large square with several columns down the centre. One side is in front of the stage and will serve as the dance floor. The other side of the room will have tables and seating. The seats are sturdy, armless, cushioned chairs with back support.
The volume of the music is going to be loud and there will be LED party lights, which some may find to be overstimulating. There will be no strobe light used, but some of the lights may flash some and change colors. For those with overstimulation concerns we recommend bringing along pair of earplugs or over-ear protection. There will be some outdoor space for chilling out, cooling down, and for those who smoke or vape, as well as some seats and tables inside. The organizers acknowledge that the COVID19 pandemic is ongoing and we encourage all attendees to wear mask and take a test before attending to help make this event accessible. Steps we are taking to help, we will have masks available at the front door at entry and we will have a very high powered carbon air filter running throughout the night. We know that this does not guarantee safety within the space, but we are taking some measures we can to reduce risk.
This is a QUEER-CENTERED event! Allies are welcome, but know that the queer experience is going to be centered. No TERFS. No SWERFS. No BIGOTS. No JERKS
